“The last two eras of air sign conjunctions saw decentralization, genocide, mass immigration, collapse of ruling dynasties, depopulation, and rule by foreign immigrants over new lands. Both also saw the success of Central Asian nomads like the Huns in the Eurasian steppes, Europe, and Roman territories in the 332-571 CE cycle and the advent of Mongol rule of much of Asia and Eurasia in the 1228-1425 CE cycle.”

Jupiter-Saturn Conjunctions in Air Signs for 220 Years
The first of a series of uninterrupted Jupiter-Saturn conjunction in air signs happened in December 2020. The Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions are an element of medieval Arabic mundane astrology. The conjunctions of the greater benefic and greater malefic occur about every 20 or so years in signs of the same triplicity. They change triplicities about every 220 years moving from water to fire and then to earth and air. Until 2020, we were in the period of earthy conjunctions. It began in 1842 and ended just recently, though the period from 1980 to 2000 entailed twenty years of air sign conjunctions before a final twenty years of earth sign conjunctions ended in 2020. The decade of the 2010s was part of the final earth sign conjunction period. Though modern astrologers sometimes talk of them as existing on their own and as sort of a bellwether for large periods of time, they were used quite differently by Arabic astrologers. Medieval astrologers mostly used mean calculations of Jupiter and Saturn conjunctions. They were also analyzed in context with other elements of traditional mundane astrology, such as Aries ingresses and eclipses. In fact, Jupiter and Saturn conjunctions weren’t the only planetary conjunctions used by Arabic astrologers, as superior conjunctions of Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn, and Mars and Saturn conjunctions were also used to look at mundane events and periods of time. Though Arabic mundane astrology was very complex, Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions were a main branch of historical astrology, a term used by Ben Dykes to identify astrology that dealt with longer historical periods. Historical astrology used political-focused ingresses, conjunctional theory, and time-lord systems like mundane firdaria.1 Often, when modern astrologers discuss Jupiter and Saturn conjunctions on viral podcasts like The Astrology Podcast, they are looking at it in a general way as it relates to the mundane sphere, and not in a by-the-book, traditional manner, which would require a much more specific and yearly analysis taking many other charts and factors into account. In other words, for most modern day references to Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions, the traditional material has been adapted and modified. They often are referring to an actual approach rather than a mean approach to the planets locations, as the years are quite different. Though the traditional system that conjunctional theory was applied to used a different zodiac, mean conjunctions rather than actual conjunctions, and was only one element of a complex system, there can be value in their application in a more modern astrological context. One can look to the elemental qualities of each triplicity and the periods of human history they correspond to. They can then combine prevailing trends and themes to get an understanding of the character of each shift to a new period. We currently have left a period of the earth triplicity. Previous eras of the earth triplicity corresponded to the years 1007- 1227 CE and 170-332 CE. Many people like to point out that the most recent earth period corresponds to accumulation of material wealth, consumerism, and the advancement of science and technology largely for material reasons. In this article, I will examine the Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions in previous eras, especially the earth and air triplicities. The scope of the places looked at will include just a few regions with complete written history, and these locations are Europe, the Middle East, and China. The Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions will be called Great Conjunctions, as they were called by Arab astrologers, for the rest of this section for the sake of clarity. The article will examine the last two earth eras first and then the last two air eras. Both eras are of relevance for the current moment, as the recent past is the now finished earth era while the in the current moment it is the start of a new air era.
In the next few paragraphs we will look at the two previous earth periods of 1007- 1227 CE and 170-332 CE for any clues they can give to the character of earth and air sign eras as well as the periods of the shift from one triplicity to the other. After discussing some of the history of the earth eras, the last two air periods will be looked at. Political history as well as overall trends will be mentioned. I will also mention that there are various ways to calculate which exact years correspond to the conjunctions in the signs of each triplicity. As stated in an earlier paragraph, there are the mean and true conjunctions, both of which are used by various astrologers. To complicate matters, the conjunctions don’t occur in perfect alignment in one element, as there will be a conjunction in an element then a conjunction that follows that repeats the previous element and so forth. So, writing the general years works but its a little confusing as there are often times that precede and follow conjunctions in the previous and next element. For purposes of this article, I will use the years listed on this article by Mystic Medusa, which can be found easily online. The years listed reflect the years that the conjunctions first began until they ended. The years of the Great Conjunctions in earth are 1436- 1159 BC, 582-403 BC, 154-332 AD, 1007-1206 AD, and 1802(1842)-2020 and the years of the conjunctions in air are 1159-960 BC, 403-165 BC, 332-571 AD, 1226-1425 AD. The years I’ve listed overlap somewhat but generally hold for the last five earth periods and last four air periods.
The earth triplicity years 1007-1227 CE corresponded to the the High Middle Ages which were from 1000-1350 CE. In Europe, the first centuries of the new millenium led to urbanization, population growth, and economic growth. There were other events such as the Crusades against the Seljuk Turks, the end of the movement of nomadic people, and the large clearing of forests. In the Middle East, the Seljuk Turks took over Iran and other parts of the region. The Seljuk kingdom eventually took over Mesopotamia, Syria, the Caucasus, parts of Central Asia, and the Levant. Other Turkic dynasties added Anatolia and other regions of central Asia. In Egypt, the Fatimid Caliphate ruled before being supplanted by the Mameluks, many of whom were of mixed Turkish ethnicity. Following centuries of largely Arab rule, the region came to be ruled by Turkic peoples. Turkic rule over the Middle East unified a fractured region. In China, the Song ruled most of China, and the non-Chinese Western Xia controlled the northwest. The northeast was ruled by the Liao, but in 1125 the Jurchen conquered the Liao and proceeded to invade northern China, pushing the Song court to the south. During this time, the Song prospered economically and increased trade with foreign lands. Gunpowder first appeared and books and paper became widespread around 1050 CE. The High Middle Ages, an era connected to Jupiter-Saturn conjunctions in earth signs, saw new ethnic groups ruling and population growth and urbanization.
The previous earth triplicity era to the one that occurred during the middle ages happened from 170 to 370 CE. In China, it corresponded to the end of the Han Dynasty and the short-lived Three Kingdoms. In the Middle East, the Parthians were replaced by the Sassanians. For the Roman Empire, there were challenging events such as the Crisis of the 3rd Century, as the empire reached its apex and then began the long decline. In this cycle, the Eastern Han, the Parthians, and the Romans all faced major crises.
The Eastern Han was weakened by eunuchs and royal family infighting. Taoist religious societies also challenged central authority with large scale rebellions, not unlike the religious rebellions of the Taipings and Boxers that would happen in the 1850s and early 1900s of the just finished earth triplicity era of 1854-2020. Finally, the dynasty collapsed and the Three Kingdoms era succeeded it.
During the Three Kingdoms, China was largely three states, Cao Wei, Shu Han, and Eastern Wu. The Han dynasty was broken up and China splintered into a period of warlords. But in 220 CE the situation stabilized. Then in 263 CE the Shu were conquered by the Wei, and the conquest of the Wei by the Jin a few years later, and the conquest of Wu by the Jin in 280 CE. Afterwards, the Jin dynasty followed the Three Kingdoms period, from the years 266-420 CE. In 290 CE a civil conflict over succession weakened the Jin. In the century afterwards, the Western Jin fell and the Eastern Jin successor state had to deal with invasions of northern peoples. During this period, there was mass migration of the Han to the southern regions of China. The earth triplicity years corresponded to some of this time, but the Jin would collapse in the next century, when the Great Conjunctions were in the air triplicity. During the earth triplicity years, the Han collapsed and China went from warlords to the famed Three Kingdoms, and then to the Jin dynasty. During this time, China saw collapse of central authority, civil conflict, fragmentation, constant war, massive military and civilian casualties, immigration by neighboring people, and massive resettlement of the Han nationality.
The Parthians were not any luckier. The Parthians had a decentralized system and various internal problems. They were overthrown by one of their vassals, who founded the Sassanid dynasty. During the early Sassanid years, Zoroastrianism was revived. Wars with Rome were fought throughout the period that corresponded to the earth triplicity years. Generally, the Sassanian period led to a renaissance of Iranian civilization, and it would be adopted throughout the Middle East, Central Asia, and North Africa by the later Muslims.
For the Roman Empire, the years 150-350 CE didn’t lead to a complete collapse as they did for Han dynasty China and the Parthians. The first 200 years of the empire, starting from Augustus reign, to the rule of Marcus Aurelius, which ended in 180 CE, were called the Pax Romana. At this time, the empire had social stability and economic prosperity. The final years of the Pax Romana were ruled by the Five Good Emperors, starting with Nerva from 96 CE. The other good emperors were Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, and Marcus Aurelius. The shift to Great Conjunctions in earth was presided over by Antoninus Pius and Marcus Aurelius. Afterwards, weak rulers, civil conflict, and external threats led to the demise of the two hundred year order. The third century was tumultous. It was typified by the Crisis of the Third Century from 235-284 CE, as constant civil wars, Germanic invasions, and economic problems almost led to a collapse of the Roman state. Following the period of instability, Diocletian instituted the tetrarchy to solve the succession problems the empire usually dealt with. Other major changes happned at this time. Christians received religious toleration from the Edict of Milan in 313 CE. The capital was also moved to Constantinople. In the third century, the old problem of Germanic tribes entering Roman territories recurred. It became a frequent problem in the fourth century, and eventually led to the Gothic sacking of Rome in 410 CE. The years of the Great Conjunctions in earth signs corresponded to the decline and transformation of the Roman Empire, though the final collapse of the western portion of the empire occurred later in the century, during the Great Conjunctions in air signs.
There were advancements in material culture and the flourishing of new religious traditions as well. In China, paper was made in 105 CE and by the 3rd century it was commonplace to write on it. In the Roman sphere, much of the synthesis and flowering of religious traditions like Christianity, Manichaeism, Neo-Platonism, and Gnosticism occurred. At the same time, the Roman empire was beset with problems. and there was a characteristic pessimism that could be traced in the philosophies of the time.
Likewise, the previous eras of air can tell us about the era we are entering. Though the effects and changes occurring in connection with this mundane astrological signature moving to a new elemental triplicity will take years to fully materialize and become apparent, there are precedents from earlier historical periods. Previous periods of air sign conjunctions were 332-571 CE and 1228-1425 CE. The last two eras of air sign conjunctions saw decentralization, genocide, mass immigration, collapse of ruling dynasties, depopulation, and rule by foreign immigrants over new lands. Both also saw the success of Central Asian nomads like the Huns in the Eurasian steppes, Europe, and Roman territories in the 332-571 CE cycle and the advent of Mongol rule of much of Asia and Eurasia in the 1228-1425 CE cycle. The spread of diseases also occurred during both, with the spread of the Plague of Justinian in 560 and the bubonic plague in 1227. The Italian Renaissance also corresponded to this era, with Italian artistic and cultural attainment largely dating from this period and most conventional views on the period of Humanism and the beginnings of the Italian Renaissance stem from the 1340s.
In the earlier Great Conjunction of 332-571 CE, there was a cultural decline, while the 1220s period saw its opposite, with the Mongol religious and cultural tolerance leading to a great exchange of technology and science and intermingling of cultures and peoples, and the artistic and intellectual highs of the Italian Renaissance. Interestingly, the city of Alexandria was founded at the early stages of the Great Conjunctions in air signs in the 4th century BCE and would go on to be a city of great multi-cultural importance and was renowned for its learning and knowledge. Both periods saw the destruction of centers of learning, with the Library of Alexandria and the House of Wisdom in Baghdad razed, respectively, in 391 CE and 1258 CE. The destruction of the Library of Alexandria had mostly occurred over the course of centuries, but its sister library in the Serapeum was likely the last remnant that was dismantled in 391 CE. At the same time, the Renaissance was largely a rediscovery of the past. It is said that much of the work of Hellenistic scholars at Alexandria was similar, as it more about synthesis than originality.
Multi-cultural cities have sprung up during Great Conjunction in air signs periods. Alexandria was founded during one of these periods and the city had a large population of Egyptians, Greeks, and Jews. Rome became cosmopolitan at this period and Constantinople in the next period. Likewise, Karakorum was founded by the Mongols in the last air sign era and was as diverse as the empire the Mongols ruled.
As for new peoples living in lands, the last two eras of Great Conjunctions in air signs had many examples of mass migration. In the former Roman Empire, many places were inhabited by Germanic invaders. The steppes, Central Asia, and China likewise saw migrations of peoples like the Huns in Europe and the Turks and Hepthalites in Central Asia. The Sassanids, unlike the Western Romans, were successful in averting an invasion by the nomadic peoples on its borders. In China, the Sixteen Kingdoms period that followed the collapse of the Jin dynasty led to five non-Han peoples controlling much of northern China. In the 1225-1430 period, the Mongols led numerous steppe peoples to invade and inhabit new lands throughout the European and Asian continents. The period ended with the Timurid dynasty conquering much of the Middle East and the Yuan dynasty ending in the 14th century.
Depopulation occurred during both eras. Europe was hit especially hard with famine, disease, and wars in the last period of Great Conjunctions in air signs, the years 1225-1430. The Great Famine of 1315-1317 killed millions and led to a litany of societal problems. Later in the century, the Black Plague led to the death of a minimum of a third of the population of Europe, in the years 1347-1351. In the Middle East and Central Asia, the Timur wars killed between 8 to 20 million. All told, the number killed by the Black Plague was around 200 million. Additionally, it is estimated that the Mongol invasions led to 20 to 40 million dead. In the earlier Great Conjunctions in air corresponding to the years 332-570, there was likewise massive depopulation. During the Roman Empire, it is estimated that the Roman territories had between 50 to 70 million inhabitants. By the time of Charlemagne in the 800s, Europe was estimated to have a mere 20 million inhabitants. The fifth century AD had the volcanic winter of 535-536 CE and then the Plague of Justinian in 541-542 CE, two events that helped lead to a massive decline in the population. In Asia, the Sassanids fought wars against the Byzantines, Hepthalites, and the Turks. In China, there was the fractitious political authority of the the Sixteen Kingdoms period and then the Sui dynasty periods, periods of decentralized power and rule by foreigners.
Political and military victories by steppe nomads were largely achieved during periods of Great Conjunctions in air signs. The Huns terrorized the Roman Empire and were only beaten in 451 CE, after the stalemate at the Battle of the Catalunian Plains. In China and the Sassanid lands, steppe people either ruled, led to instability, or were enemies in wars. Many of the mass movements of people into the Western Roman Empire were a result of the westward movement of the Huns, who were largely invincible at the time. In the next Great Conjunction cycle, the Mongols conquered much of Asia and Europe. In Europe, the Middle East, and China, battles with steppe nomads were a major problem for the established powers of air sign Great Conjunction cycles.
Therefore, in the last two cycles of Great Conjunctions in air signs, there was depopulation, disease, inventions, mass migrations, multi-culturalism, types of learning, and ascendancy of steppe nomads. Generally, the end of a period of Great Conjunctions can be associated with the end of political orders, as was illustrated by looking at both Great Conjunction periods in earth signs and those in air signs. So, the beginning of a new period of Great Conjunctions in air signs at the very least signals instability and changes in political systems and elites.
Dates that Jupiter and Saturn were in Earth signs, starting from January 1st, 1800 to January 1st, 2020. Data is from Solar Fire 9.
